President Barack Obama nominated Sonia Sotomayor to become the 111th U.S. Supreme Court justice in May 2009, and she was confirmed by a Senate vote of 68-31 three months later.
Sotomayor became the first Hispanic and the third woman ever to serve on the nation's highest court. She continues to sit on the bench today as an associate justice. As a Latina who made history in the courts, Sotomayor's triumph was covered internationally and was highly supported in newspapers with Hispanic readership.
